BACK  TO PARK

Kingdom Come's Trails can the melt the stress of the weary modern life.

The park offers approximately 7 miles of easy to strenuous hiking trails. All hiking trails are marked and the park gift shop will give a current trail map. Trails to the Cave Amphitheater and around the lake are reinforced with sandstone blocks.

The park is an access point for the Little Shepherd Trail, a 38-mile narrow road on top of Pine Mountain. The Trail, or Kentucky Highway 1679, clings to the southern edge of Pine Mountain's crest from the intersection of US 421 at this location to US 119 south of Whitesburg. This serpetine route twists though numerous refreshing overlooks and massive, spine-like rock out-croppings, termed "Hogbacks." Rhododendron and Mountain Laurel bloom profusely in craggy exposures.

This rugged route is not for the faint of heart. Paved sections are easily traversed, but gravel sections, which compose about half of the Trail, can rattle your bones lose, if your heart doesn't jump out first!

  • Mountain bikes and hikers greatly enjoy the more remote sections of this route.
  • If you drive, a 4x4 vehicle is recommended. Current paved sections are: US 421 to KY 2010 and KY 160 to Creech Overlook.
