3D Lynch
"Built during WWI by U.S. Steel"

A Perspective from the West

As one of the most productive mining operations in the U.S., Lynch had the largest coal tipple in the world when it was built in 1921. US Coal & Coke, a subsidiary of US Steel, built Lynch, and all the buildings and homes, in 1917. Mine Portal 31 area offers walking tours, the Lamphouse Museum, and a RV park, with hook-ups, near the historic L&N Rail Depot.

The Lamphouse Museum is open daily. This small museum is housed in the historic lamphouse used by miners to check out lamps before descending into the underground mine. Exhibits include an assortment of light gear, mining tools, and a brass shovel used by rescue workers during one of the most deadly mine explosions in Kentucky's history.

Portal No. 31 Underground Mine Tour, slated to open in 2003, will offer visitors the unique experience of touring an actual coal mine by rail car. Visitors will adorn the traditional protective gear of the coal miner as they enjoy animated exhibits along the tour. Outside Portal #31 stands a black granite monument in tribute to long time president of the United Mine Workers John L. Lewis and a memorial to U.S. Steel District #1 miners who died in mining accidents.
